Here's how it works:

The reflective layer of the disc covers only the inner 8cm, and the rest of the disc is either a clear or strongly contrasting polycarbonate. The design is printed over the reflective layer giving the illusion of shape. The disc has all the attributes of a 3"disc (holds 192 MB of data) but has the look and feel of a 5".
